	Name: Miguel Alvarez Nickname: Alvarez Gender: Male Age and date of birth: 27 / May 13, 1976 Species: Human Sexuality: Straight Fandom: HBO's OZ PB: Kirk Acevedo From what time in canon is your character from? 2003 Complete Character Description: Miguel is 6ft1 with shortly cropped dark brown hair and brown eyes. His skin tone is darker thanks to his Salvadoran heritage and Miguel is in great physical shape with a slender yet muscular body thanks to working out in the prison gym. He has a long scar on the right side of his face and numerous tattoos, the most prominent of which are a black outlined rose on his left hand, a a cross composed of symbol designs on his right upper arm and a sacred heart on the inside of his left arm. Miguel can normally be found in baggy jeans, sleeveless t-shirts, work boots, sneakers and basically anything that's comfortable. While this convict use to carry himself with a confidant attitude, after six years of being in the Oswald State Correction Facility has made Miguel very wary and watchful. Often Miguel appears on edge and serious but this is just how he has learned to be while in prison.
Personality: Miguel is very human in that he has his good side and his bad side. This is a man who is very much in the gray area because while he can be nice, friendly, and helpful to others, Miguel is also very self-serving. He won't risk his life for anyone and has been known to desert his friends in times of need, like when he abandoned Father Mukada during the prison riot. Having done horrible things in his past, Miguel suffers from depression and has a strong urge to right some of the wrongs that he has committed and at this point he is trying very hard to resist to committing anymore crimes or hurtful acts. Friends of Miguel will discover that he is funny and has an idealistic side that he keeps hidden as well as that Miguel truly wants to be a better person. He's just having a hard time changing his life around. Somewhat grim and serious at times while other times he can be annoyingly flippant.
	Weaknesses: Miguel has a few weaknesses such as being human, easily angered, and making poor decisions. He is not overly intelligent and therefore can be fooled by those smarter than him. He suffers from guilt and depression which at times can cause Miguel to be dangerous both to others and himself. He can be shot, poison, burned and harmed in a number of fashions. Thanks to all of his time in solitary confinement, Miguel suffers from claustrophobia. Strengths: Speaks fluent Spanish and English; Miguel is in top physical shape and has had some experience boxing so he knows how to defend himself. Due to his experiences in prison, Miguel is skilled at fashioning weapons out of household items and Miguel gets along great with animals. While he's not smart, Miguel does think on his feet and can come up with ideas quickly, as well as figure out how to keep himself alive. After being stabbed numerous times in prison Miguel has proven to be very resilient to physical harm.
Backstory: Growing up in a poor and tough Latino neighborhood, Miguel knew all too well the dangers of prison life before he was even sentenced to OZ as both his father and his grandfather were serving life sentences. In his single parent home and surrounded by gangs, it was all too easy for Miguel to become a member of El Norte, one of the fiercest gangs in his neighborhood. Yet, despite all the illegal activities Miguel would be a part of while in the gang, he was actually sent to prison because of an assault charge against an older man after the older man damaged Miguel's beloved car. Miguel was not the only person to be sentenced for this crime as his girl friend Maritza also is sentenced and discovers she is pregnant with Miguel's child. Unfortunately, due to the drugs Miguel and Maritza did during their relationship, their child does not survive and Miguel cuts his face and sank into a deep depression. For a brief time after Miguel lead the Latino's in Oz but was usurped by El Cid who told Alvarez that if he wants to remain a member of El Norte and not become the latino's prag then he would have to blind Eugenie Rivera, a new CO in Oz and a former gang member who El Cid hates. Miguel eventually complied to save his own skin and in that moment committed his worst act of violence that will haunt him till his death. To add to his despair, once Miguel had been captured for this crime, he was sent to Solitary, where his grandfather had recently died. Depressed and regretful, Miguel attempted suicide to escape his horrible life in solitary as the other CO's regularly beat him and starved the criminal. After his suicide attempt he was brought out of solitary confinement to participate in counseling with Eugene Rivera but after one session, Eugene walked out. Meanwhile El Cid and the other latino's made an attempt on Miguel life shortly before he was sent back to solitary confinement. Shortly after being sent back, Miguel was stabbed by another prisoner and sent to the hospital ward in the prison where he learned that another prisoner, Busmalis, was digging an escape tunnel. Miguel escaped with him and was on the run for three months until he was captured near the Mexican border and sent back to Oz. Soon after another attempt was made on Miguel's life and he killed in self-defense and was sent to solitary confinement once more. He finally got out of solitary confinement during a renovation project and was told that if he behaved well, he would not have to go back. To help stay on the right track, Miguel became part of a prison program to train seeing eye dogs for the blind. The convict was determined to train his dog in order to give it to Eugene Rivera and showed a great talent in dog training by teaching the seeing eye dog to obey both Spanish and English commands and Miguel was the only prisoner at Oz to complete the program. Impressed by Miguel's turn around, Tim McManus and Sister Pete wrote letters of recommendation to the parole board in the hopes to help Miguel be paroled but Warden Glynn sabotaged Miguel's parole meeting by feeding the parole board information on Miguel and making them bias toward him. One member of the parole board told Miguel "What the fuck makes you think we should set you free, you little prick?" which set Miguel off and caused him to attack the member and have himself sent back to solitary. After falling asleep in his cell Miguel woke up to find himself miraculously free from prison on the planet.
